Scope and Content View of the tower at Torthorwald Castle, Dumfries and Galloway A motte-and-bailey castle was probably erected here by the de Tothorwald family in the 12th century, succeeded by a stone tower built in the late 13th century. Extensive remodelling in the late 14th or early 15th century inserted two new vaulted chambers on the ground and first floors. Though now ruined, this photograph clearly shows the remains of the lofty arched vault which once enclosed the great hall. At the invitation of David I, the Yorkshire family of de Brus received the lordship of Annandale around 1124. Many of their vassals and tenants travelled north, such as the family who later became the de Tothorwald's. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
