Scope and Content Aerial view of a settlement on Birrens Hill, Dumfries and Galloway These earthworks occupy part of the broad ridge of Birrens Hill, and comprise an earthen bank and ditch which probably enclosed a small prehistoric settlement. In this aerial photograph snow highlights the circuit of the settlement's ditch. Much of the interior was disturbed by the building of a post-medieval sheep-farm nearby. Settlements like this enclosed timber-built round-houses with a yard for keeping animals and storage. A mixture of animal husbandry and arable cultivation were likely practised.
