Scope and Content Shaw Hill, Calkin, settlement, Dumfries and Galloway Situated on a narrow terrace on the north-east flank of Shaw Hill overlooking the Boyken Burn valley are the remains of a large ditched settlement partly overlain by a smaller one. Snow in the broad ditch highlights the outline of this oval-shaped settlement. On either side of the ditch are earth banks. A small settlement reoccupied the west (topmost) quarter of the site. Settlements like this probably contained timber-built round-houses with a yard for animals and storage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
