Scope and Content Detail of carving on pulpit inside New Abbey Parish Church, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. This is a detail of the pulpit inside the new parish church. The medieval nave was used as a parish church until it was deemed too small for the congregation. In 1818-21 a new parish church, designed by William Burn, was added to the east end of the nave. This ornately carved oak pulpit is in the form of a baldacchino - a canopy supported on four columns usually placed above an altar. It was designed by Robert Rowand Anderson, who decorated the interior of the new church in 1890-1905. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
