Scope and Content Interior view of New Abbey Parish Church, Dunfermline Abbey, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline Abbey was founded by David I in 1128 and completed in its original form in 1250. Numerous additions and alterations followed in the 14th and 15th centuries. Abandoned after the Reformation (1560), the abbey was ransacked for building stone. This shows the interior of the abbey church nave, which was used as a parish church until an extension was added to the east end by William Burn in 1818-21. The medieval nave is aisled, the aisles being formed by two arcades of massive piers, seen here. The arcades are composed of seven circular piers surmounted by scalloped capitals. The two easternmost pairs of piers are carved with a chevron or spiral pattern, perhaps to draw attention to the altar which originally stood in the centre. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
