Scope and Content Settlement, enclosures and cultivation remains on Whitstone Hill, Dumfries and Galloway Occupying the level top of Whitstone Hill are the well-preserved remains of a prehistoric settlement. The surrounding ground shows traces of post-medieval farming. Amidst post-medieval turf field banks and traces of rig cultivation are the well-preserved earthen rampart and ditch of a small oval-shaped settlement. No interior buildings are visible here, though the causewayed entrance can be seen on the west. Settlements like this enclosed timber-built round-houses with a yard for keeping animals and storage. A mixture of animal husbandry and arable cultivation were likely practised. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
