Scope and Content Drawing showing elevations and sections of Sailors' Walk, Nos 443-9 High Street, Kirkcaldy, Fife Kirkcaldy became a royal burgh in 1644 and originated as a settlement around a 16th-century harbour. The Industrial Revolution had a great impact on the town, and it became a centre for linoleum manufacture in the 19th century. This shows the buildings known as Sailors' Walk. Originally a 17th-century Customs House (right gable) and townhouse (left gable), they were restored in 1954-9 by Wheeler & Sproson for The National Trust for Scotland, and now serve as offices and a shop. These buildings display many features characteristic of Fife's coastal towns and villages such as crowstepped gables, external forestairs leading to first-floor entrances, pantiled roofs and limewashed harling.
