Scope and Content Fort and palisaded enclosures at Broomhillbank, Dumfries and Galloway The substantial remains of this complex site occupy the south-west shoulder of Broomhillbank Hill. Here an oval-shaped fort, within twin ditches and ramparts overlies two earlier palisaded enclosures. Only the E arc of a low bank and a faint curving groove (a palisade trench) immediately in front of the fort's outer bank remain of this earlier phase. Palisades were employed throughout the Bronze Age to defend small homesteads and settlements. Typically, stout wooden posts were set in narrow bedding trenches and secured with stones.
