Scope and Content Fort at Beattock Hill, Dumfries and Galloway Crowning the summit of Beattock Hill, just over 1km west of Beattock, lie the impressive remains of a fort. Quarrying has destroyed part of the fort. Seen from the air, the fort is impressive within its twin ditches and stone rampart. The entrance lies on the south-west. Outside the fort is a small cluster of hut-circles, probably marking the earliest occupation at this site. Whilst appearing impressive, many hillforts probably were constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
