Scope and Content Fort at Middlegill, Dumfries and Galloway Within a forestry clearing 200m north of Middlegill farmstead there are the remains of a fort. From this site, there are extensive views to the Evan and Cloffin valleys. Roughly oval on plan, the enclosing stone wall is reduced to ground level and much spread. On this aerial view of the site, the outline can still be made out. Turf banks divide the interior into enclosures, as can be seen near the centre of the fort. Whilst appearing impressive, many forts probably were constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
