Scope and Content Cist known as King Schaws Grave, Dumfries and Galloway Around 1828, the round cairn covering this slab-built cist was cleared and according to contemporary sources some 150 cartloads of stone removed to build a field dyke. At the centre of the round cairn lay this slab-built cist, which held a single human skeleton. Radiating from each corner of the cist were rows of overlapping stones with a second cist at the end of one row. Bone fragments were found between the rows. In 1857, when first surveyed during preparation for the Ordnance Survey first edition maps, the site was known locally as the grave of King Schaw, presumably a figure of local legend.
