Scope and Content Fragment of a free-standing cross-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. As well as the named free-standing crosses, such as St Martin's Cross and St John's Cross, there are a number of fragments of lesser crosses on Iona. Many of these are on display in the Abbey Museum and the Nunnery Museum. This drawing shows part of an arm of a free-standing cross. The outline of the arm is circular, with slight projections at the outer corners. It is decorated with a six-petalled marigold and a beaded border. It is now in the Abbey Museum (No 46).
