Description Photograph Album No 145: Addistoun Maroon hard-backed album containing 16 brown pages, numbered (pp 23 - 30 missing), presented by the Centre for Architectural History and Theory, University of Edinburgh. Photographic record of the building of both house and lodge inscribed inside front cover 'Leica Book III Addistoun 1937 to 1946', including the architect Charles Geddes Soutar (1878 - 1952), surveyors and builders. Addistoun was built on the site of a previous house at Ratho by Annette and Dr Janet Smith whose flitting from 11 Midmar Gardens, Edinburgh is shown and there are views of the interior and exterior of the new house. During WWII the grounds were used to grow food and there are photographs, some of which were published in The Field in the Spring of 1941, of family members attending to the ploughing, hens, bees, goats and haystacks, and of bomb craters. One photograph shows 3051101 Pte E Waterston. The Smith's parents had built Clashinruich, Glencairn [Ballater] in 1915 - a small green page with 5 pictures of it is enclosed

Scope and Content 'Addistoun 1937 to 1946' - 16 pages of photographs showing the building of the house for Annette and Dr Janet Smith, including the cottage and garden and grounds on the Dalmahoy estate). Starting in February 1937 with the remains of the previous building the progress is dated and the people named, including the architect Charles Geddes Soutar; tradesmen are shown at work and after the flitting in March 1939 there are several completed interiors.
