Scope and Content Lord Chancellor's House, Crossgate, Cupar, Fife The Lord Chancellor's House on Crossgate was built in the 17th century and remodelled in the 18th century. A plaque records the birth of Lord Chancellor John Campbell in the house in 1779. The three-storeyed house has crow-stepped gables typical of the 17th century. The segmental entrance arch is 18th-century. John Campbell (1779-1861), first Baron Campbell, famous legal biographer, Lord Chief Justice and Lord Chancellor was the son of the George Campbell, writer of the Statistical Account of Scotland's article on Cupar, and for 50 years its minister.
