Scope and Content Mid-19th century view of Cupar, Fife Cupar began as a settlement around a castle of the Earls of Fife. The castle was demolished by King David II to stop the English from occupying it, but the town, a royal burgh since 1328 and seat of the sheriff of Fife, survived. This is a view of the burgh in about 1840 18th and 19th-century redevelopment probably destroyed most of those of Cupar's earlier buildings that had survived the disastrous fires of 1616 and 1669. These included the houses of the local nobility who sold up to move to less urban locations. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
