Scope and Content Cross-marked stone, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This block of granite stands outside the west door of the abbey church. A shallow depression has been carved out of the stone to make it into a trough. A Greek cross has been carved on one end of the stone. The stone has been described as a trough used by pilgrims to wash their feet in. In local tradition it is known as 'the cradle of the wind' as it was said to attract a favourable wind. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
