Scope and Content Cross-slab known as St Matthew's Cross, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This drawing shows the partially reconstructed east face of the cross. At the base of the shaft is a square panel of diagonal key-work decoration. Above was a series of figure-scenes, of which only the lowest, showing Adam and Eve, survives. The remains of this ringed cross stand on a stepped granite base 12 m from the west door of the abbey church. Part of the cross was broken off before 1764, and now lies beside the base. It has been referred to as St Matthew's Cross since the 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
