Scope and Content Cartouche above entrance to Bible Land, Canongate, Edinburgh Bible Land, named after the Biblical quotations above the door, accommodated the hall of the Incorporation of Cordiners or shoemakers, an incorporation of the Canongate established in the 16th century. The cartouche, dated 1677, has the Cordiners' emblem, the shoemaker's rounding-knife, and crown of their patron St Crispin. The inscriptions are from Psalm 133 and Proverbs. The Cordiners or 'Cordovers' used leather from Cordova in Spain. In the 16th century, there were eight craft incorporations of the Canongate, distinct from those of Edinburgh. The earliest, the hammermen or metalworkers, were established in 1540. The cordiners followed in 1554, and tailors later in the same year. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
