Scope and Content View from number 3 Headframe of older part of Barony Colliery, Ayrshire Barony Colliery's Shafts 1 and 2 opened in 1910 under Bairds and Dalmellington Ltd. Shaft 3, planned in 1938, opened in 1945. Shaft 2 collapsed and Shaft 1 was filled in 1962. Production halted until 1965 when shaft 4 was sunk. The mine closed in 1989. The row of buildings seen here comprises of, from left to right: The two original Winding-Engine Houses for Shafts 1 and 2; the Electrical Power House; and the Water Treatment Plant.
