Scope and Content Flue, base of chimney, and heat-exchanger of Lancashire Boilers, Barony Colliery, Ayrshire Barony Colliery's Shafts 1 and 2 opened in 1910 under Bairds and Dalmellington Ltd. Shaft 3, planned in 1938, opened in 1945. Shaft 2 collapsed and Shaft 1 was filled in 1962. Production halted until 1965 when shaft 4 was sunk. The mine closed in 1989. The large pipe running across the bottom of the picture is a flue taking smoke from the Lancashire Boilers to the chimney (right). In the background are the remains of a heat-exchanger or economiser. Colliery boilers were often fitted with economisers. These saved energy by extracting and recycling waste heat from the flue before it escaped into the chimney. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
