Scope and Content Pithead baths, Cardowan Colliery, Lanarkshire Cardowan Colliery was opened in 1930 by Nimmo and Dunlop. In its heyday in 1959, its 1970 workers produced 1,550 tons of coal per day from its two shafts. It was closed in 1983 after a serious fire caused excessive levels of methane in the pit. The Pithead Baths' dedication plaque reads: 'Miners Welfare Fund, Cardowan Colliery Pithead baths. These baths erected by the Miners Welfare Committee in Pursuance of the Mining Industry Act of 1926, were opened & handed over to trustees on 23.2.1935'. After 1911, colliery owners were required by law to provide pithead baths for the miners so they could wash the coal dust off their bodies and out of their clothes before going home. Until the 20th century, many homes did not have bathrooms. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
