Scope and Content Fort at Kaimes Hill, Midlothian Kaimes Hill fort no longer survives, having been destroyed in the course of aggregate quarrying. The site was, however, extensively excavated and recorded prior to its destruction. Excavations discovered that the fort had been constructed, rebuilt and occupied in a number of phases during the latter half of the 1st millennium BC. Part of the defences lie exposed in this aerial view, and a round-house can be seen within the ramparts. Whilst appearing impressive, many hillforts were probably constructed as a display of prestige and power by local leaders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
