Scope and Content Celtic Park Stadium (Parkhead), No 95 Kerrydale Street, Glasgow, from east On 6 November 1887, Celtic Football Club was formally constituted to alleviate poverty in Glasgow's East End parishes. Their first playing ground was at Springfield Road about 200m from the present site which they came to in 1892. Redevelopment work carried out by Percy Johnson-Marshall & Partners during the mid-1990s has brought the capacity to over 60,000. This shows the ground from the east, looking across at the Celtic end. To the left is the problematic south stand which cost £250,000 in 1971. The canopy was supported on a massive goal-post-like framework, the 'crossbar' of which was one of the biggest tubular steel girders ever constructed, measuring 92.5m long and 5.3m deep, and was transported to Glasgow all the way from Chichester. The new construction created room for 8,686 spectators, but it proved unsuccessful, and six years after its completion, Celtic sought damages from the architects, consulting engineers and British Steel, but all three denied liability. As a means of protecting fans from the elements it left a lot to be desired, especially for those in the front seats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
