Scope and Content Fragment of a carved cross, on Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This drawing shows the head of a small disc-headed cross. One face has a rather clumsily made carving of the crucifixion, with the figure of Christ flanked by two sub-oval bosses. The back of the stone is undecorated. This cross-head was presented to the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland in 1938. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
