Scope and Content Number 2 Winder, Number 2 Winding Tower, Monkton Hall Colliery, Midlothian Monkton Hall Colliery was sunk in 1954-67 and was one of the National Coal Board's five Scottish super-pits. Coal production reached 5,000 tons per day in 1968. Most of the output went to Cockenzie Power Station. It was closed in 1997 and then demolished. The cable on the drum (far left) of this electrical winder is attached to a cage for carrying up to 130 men up and down Number 2 Shaft. It is equipped with dynamic braking. Dynamic braking works by turning a winder's electric motor into a generator. The descending cage or skip slows down as it turns the motor and its energy is converted into electric current.
