Scope and Content Control Room of Number 2 Shaft's winder, Seafield Colliery, Kirkcaldy, Fife Seafield Colliery was sunk by the National Coal Board in 1954-66. It was one of five new super-pits and, in its heyday in 1970, employed 2,466 people. It was closed in 1988. The control panel tells the operator the positions and speed of the cages in the shaft, as well as the condition of the winders. Most colliery winders are manually operated bcause: the load varies; the shaft's depth changes as the mine expands; and for safety reasons since, until recently, only a human could be trusted to control and monitor the machinery.
