Scope and Content Shafts 1 and 2 of Cardowan Colliery, Lanarkshire Cardowan Colliery was opened in 1930 by Nimmo and Dunlop. In its heyday in 1959, its 1970 workers produced 1,550 tons of coal per day from its two shafts. It was closed in 1983 after a serious fire caused excessive levels of methane in the pit. On the left are the reconstructed headframes of Shafts 1 and 2. The cable looped over the pulley is driven by the steam-powered winding-engines in the Winding-Engine House (right). The nearest, Number 1, is the downcast shaft. By law, every mine must have two shafts so that miners can escape if one shaft is blocked. This also ensures proper ventilation of the mine. Fresh air is pumped into the downcast shaft and stale air is expelled from the upcast shaft. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
