Scope and Content Stone circle at Temple Wood, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Temple Wood was excavated by J G Scott between 1974-9. His work revealed the remains of a smaller and earlier stone circle to the north-east of the main ring and a series of burials previously unknown. Seen from the north-east, the stones of the main circle form an oval shape rather than a circle. The remains of a cairn, which completely covered the stone circle, can be seen banked around the stones, partly obscuring them. In the Bronze Age many older monuments were reused for burials, in common with many other sites in Scotland. People still regarded these places as special, though their original use might not have been readily understood. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
