Scope and Content Cup-and-ring markings at Achnabreck, Argyll and Bute To the north of Achnabreck farmhouse can be found some of the most elaborate and extensive cup-and-ring carvings in Scotland. The carvings are in three groups, the largest group being spread across three separate sheets of exposed rock. This group of markings, situated in a forestry plantation 150m to the east of the largest set, is a mixture of multi-ringed cupmarks, 'gutters' as well as plain cupmarks. Some of the cup-and-ring marks have as many as six rings. Broadly similar Neolithic rock-art appears in north-west Spain, Brittany and Ireland. The purpose of these carvings remains uncertain.
