Copy of A 13972

Scope and Content Fort at Dun Chonallaich, Kilmartin, Argyll and Bute Resting on a crag rising from marshland, the fort at Dun Chonallaich has a commanding view of the surrounding landscape. Recent vandalism and the building of a film set have damaged the monument. During a survey in 1983 carried out by RCAHMS, this gaming board was found in rubble on the fort's wall. Incised onto the surface of the stone are lines forming a grid pattern. The board is of Early Historic date, and was used for a game known to the Irish, British and Scandinavians. Similar to chess, it was a defence and attack game with a king, defenders and attackers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
