Scope and Content Graveslab fragment in Abbey Museum, Iona, Argyll and Bute By the 9th century, Iona had been subjected to Viking raids. Unlike Lindisfarne, where the monastery was abandoned in 875 AD, Iona withstood the Vikings and maintained a monastic presence there, although new monasteries were set up at Kells and Dunkeld. This is a fragment of half a recumbent graveslab, carved with an Irish style double-ribbon cross with expanded terminals and a square interlaced round its centre. The Norse runes read, 'Kali the son of Olvir laid this stone over his brother Fugl'. The Vikings became settlers and by the later 10th century, some were turning to Christianity, as can be seen from the decoration on the graveslab. Two other gravestones carved to suit Norse taste, dating to the late 10th century, have also survived. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
