Scope and Content Aerial view of Wick, Highland Wick, a royal burgh since 1589, remained a small town until after 1801 when Thomas Telford planned the harbour and new town on behalf of the British Fisheries Society. By the middle of the 19th century, Wick was Europe's largest herring port. The area to the left of the harbour was christened Pultneytown after Sir William Pultney, Governor of the British Fisheries Society. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
