Scope and Content Plan of panelled first-floor private room, 1597 block of Culross Palace, Culross, Fife Culross Palace, originally called 'The Great Lodging', was built between 1597 and 1611 by George Bruce. Restored by The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland, it is the best surviving example of a merchant's house from that period. The first-floor private room is part of the original 1597 block. The panelling was installed during the reign of George II (1727-1760). A door to the north (right) leads to the fire-proof vaulted strongroom added in the early 17th century. George Bruce of Culross (later of Carnock) who built Culross Palace, was a merchant, entrepreneur and industrialist who made his fortune developing the local coal and salt industry. He was knighted by James VI and died in 1625. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
