Scope and Content Mooring island, Crinan Canal, Argyll The Crinan Canal was built in 1794-1801 to join Loch Gilp and Loch Crinan and is still operational. Though only 14.48 km long, its construction was difficult because the ground was either too soft or too rocky. This small artificial island was originally used for mooring boats.
