Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This graveslab was formerly in St Oran's Chapel. It tapers slightly towards the base and has bevelled edges. It is carved with a long-shafted ringed-cross, with a plaited base. On the left side is a sword, and on the right plant-scroll ornament. The carving style probably belongs to what is known as the Iona school. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 56).
