Description Oblique aerial view.

Date 1994

Collection RCAHMS Aerial Photography

Catalogue Number SC 373320

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of C 25295

Scope and Content Henge known as Pict's Knowe, Dumfries and Galloway This henge comprises a low mound of sand encircled by a ditch and then a low spread bank. A single entrance opens to the east. During the excavation, stakeholes were found around the ditch terminals, while the ditch itself had been recut. The water-filled ditch of the henge is clearly visible on this aerial photograph which was taken before the excavations. The henge lies on the floor of a valley. Cattle trampling, rabbit burrowing and tree roots had caused tremendous damage to the monument and, as a consequence it was excavated in 1994 and 1995. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
