Scope and Content Roman temporary camps at Ellisland, Dumfries and Galloway The Roman temporary camps at Ellisland are situated by the W bank of the River Nith. There are no surface remains and the land is normally under arable cultivation. Aerial photography has been invaluable in identifying Roman sites throughout Scotland. There are in fact two camps here, with parts of the NW and SW sides common to both. A gateway with a titulus (a short piece of rampart and ditch) is on the SW side. After a day's march, Roman soldiers would construct a defended camp. A V-shaped ditch was excavated using tools they carried. The upcast formed a low mound into which each soldier sank two wooden stakes which he carried to form a barrier. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
