Scope and Content St Michael's Church, St Michael Street, Dumfries St Michael's Church was built on the site of a medieval church dedicated to the same saint. The Georgian church was built in 1742-9 by the masons Alexander Affleck and Thomas Twaddell and the wright James Hartley to their own design. The Gothic-like spire was designed by William Hanna and Henry Wilkinson. The graveyard contains many monuments, including the mausoleum of Robert Burns. There is also a memorial to 420 cholera victims, as well as a granite obelisk which marks an area of tombstones dedicated to the Covenanters. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
