Scope and Content Nithsdale Mills, St Michael Street, Dumfries The wool industry had always been important in Dumfries and Galloway. However, after the mechanisation of cloth production in the 1830s it expanded rapidly. Tweeds and hosiery were especially important to the local economy between 1860 and 1885. Nithsdale Mill was founded as a tweed factory in 1857 by Robert and Walter Scott. It had four storeys and was built of brick with sandstone dressings, in an Italianate style with an octagonal chimney. Robert Scott was the first manufacturer to produce tweed in Dumfries. His employee, John McKeachie, who was a damask weaver, supervised the experimental weaving of tweed which soon became popular with rich and poor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
