Scope and Content Rockhall House, Dumfriesshire Rockhall House is a three-storeyed rubble-built laird's house which was said in 1610 to have been 'laitlie constructit' by Sir William Grierson of Lag. It began as a tower-house and the original entrance was at the foot of the turret. In the early 18th century the house was extended by the addition of a broad wing. It was then remodelled by Alexander Crombie in 1854-5. Internally, the house was much altered but the vaulted 16th-century basement remains. In the 18th century many lairds began to live in houses which were more domestic in appearance. The original tower-house, which had combined domesticity with security, was often incorporated into the new dwelling-house as at Rockhall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
