Scope and Content 'Queir', Terregles Church, Dumfriesshire The 'queir' of Terregles Church was built as a burial place on behalf of Agnes, Lady Herries in the late 16th century. Some traditional Gothic forms of the late Middle Ages, e.g. a three-sided apse, have been retained in this post-Reformation design. This is the interior of the chancel or 'queir'. It was restored by James Barbour in 1875-9. In the centre of the nave there is a rectangular stairwell which goes down to the burial vault, where the coffins rested on stone ledges. The purpose of the 'queir' was to provide a burial place separate from the body of the church. Despite the fact that in 1581 the reformed Church of Scotland had banned burial within churches, this mortuary chapel was built in 1583. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
