Scope and Content Fourmerkland Tower, Dumfriesshire The tower-house was the most popular type of dwelling-house among the landowning classes in Scotland from the late Middle Ages until the 17th century. It offered a good degree of security for relatively little expense. Fourmerkland Tower is a small four-storeyed tower-house built of rubble with crow-stepped gables. It was probably built in 1590 for Robert Maxwell, as it has a panel bearing the Maxwell arms, the initials of Robert and his wife, and the date 1590. The tower-house was a tall narrow building which balanced the needs of domesticity and defence. By the 18th century many lairds were building houses which incorporated the original tower-house. Fourmerkland, however, was never extended in this way. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
