Scope and Content Suspension Bridge, Dumfries Opened in 1875, the suspension bridge in Dumfries was one of the last of its type to be built in Scotland. The bridge was rebuilt in 1985, to the original design, by W A Fairhurst and Partners. The chain footbridge was designed by John Willet. Flat-link chains were suspended between two pairs of cast iron Doric columns. The sides of the walkway were latticed. After 1876, multi-strand wire-cable was used for nearly all suspension bridges. Ferryboats had been used to transport workers across the River Nith to the tweed mills and there had been many accidents. The fund, organised by the provost of the burgh, was sufficient only for a suspension bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
