Scope and Content Observatory, Church Street, Maxwelltown, Dumfries This is the entrance to Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura. The brick-built museum was erected in 1862 and extended in 1981. The white tower was built as a windmill in 1798 but was acquired by the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Astronomical Society in 1835. The four-storeyed tower was converted into an observatory and camera obscura by Walter Newall. He added a pedimented door and windows, as well as a roof crowned with a lantern cupola. Revolving lenses and mirrors were used in the camera obscura to give excellent views of the town. The establishment of the observatory was timed to coincide with the arrival of Halley's comet in 1835. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
