Scope and Content Fortlet at Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway The Roman fortlet at Sanquhar stands near the confluence of the River Nith and the Carrick Water. It was discovered by aerial photography. The fortlet is visible as a cropmark in aerial views such as this one. The defences consisted of a single ditch, about 3m wide. The location of this fortlet suggests that a Roman road branched off from the Carzield - Crawford road at Drumlanrig fort, and continued up the Nith. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
