Scope and Content West face, gravestone of Janet Muirhead, Corstorphine churchyard, Edinburgh This gravestone commemorates Janet Muirhead, daughter of a local smallholder, who died in 1751 aged 17. Seen from the back, the three-dimensional angel of the Resurrection appears to be wearing a wig. Unusually, the panel contains a wright's compasses and set-square. Beneath are symbols of mortality and death, including a skull viewed in profile. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
