Scope and Content Byre stalls in south block of steading, Crackaig Farm, Highland Crackaig Farm, on the east coast of Sutherland, is part of the estates of the Dukes of Sutherland. It was one of several single tenant farms which began to be formed on this coastal strip in the 1790s and replaced the previous communal settlements associated with the old method of subsistence farming. This shows the byre stalls within the steading block. The original steading was built in 1829 with walls 3.2m high. As well as the byre, it included a barn, cattle sheds, granary, hayloft, stables, cart shed, stack yard and pig sty. Further renovations were carried out during the 1850s. To create large, single tenant farms such as Crackaig, many former tenants living on small parcels of land had to be evicted. Having established arable farms on the coast, big sheep farms were set up on the higher, less fertile ground evicting many more tenants in what became known as 'The Clearances'.
