Description NAS Canna survey

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number D 94115 CS

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 370002

Scope and Content The King of Norway's Grave at Rubha Langanes, Canna Structures like the King of Norway's Grave have been found across the islands of Canna and Sanday, and have traditionally been identified as Norse burials. Some, however, are situated close to the shore and are undoubtedly kelp kilns of more recent date. The King of Norway's Grave lies on a grassy promontory below the cliffs. Its sides and ends are defined by rows of boulders set on edge. A series of boulders extend upslope from its south-west end. A survey of Canna and Sanday was undertaken by the Royal Commission to record all the archaeological sites and monuments and the landscape within which they lie. This landscape is published as RCAHMS Broadsheet 5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
