Scope and Content Carved stone effigy of Gilbride MacKinnon, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This image shows one of two Latin inscriptions on carved on the slab in Lombardic capitals. It reads + HIC IACET FINGONE MAC CARMAIC ET FIN/LAID MAC FINGONE ET EOGAN. This is the later of the two, and is carved along the top edge of the slab. Two Latin inscriptions read 'Here lies Gilbride MacKinnon with his sons Ewan and Cornebellus', and, 'Here lies Finguine, son of Cormac, and Finlay, son of Finguine, and Ewan'. It is carved in the style of the Iona school. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
