Scope and Content Grave-slab, from Iona, Argyll and Bute Iona is one of the most important religious sites in Scotland. The earliest community was formed by St Columba who came over from Ireland around AD 563. This was replaced by the Benedictine Abbey and Augustinian Nunnery in around AD 1200. This graveslab was formerly in the burial ground, Reilig Odhrain. This view shows a detail from the carved decoration. It comprises a priest in Eucharistic vestments, in prayer before a draped alter. On the alter is a cross and a chalice. The slab has the inscription HIC IACET (...here lies...). The carving style belongs to what is known as the Iona school. The slab is now in the Abbey Museum (No 71). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
